The Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft spans thirty-nine volumes and details four hundred years of history in the western hemisphere, from Alaska to Panama. The volumes in the Rancho’s collection range in date from 1883 to 1890. These nineteenth century books are bound in sheepskin and imprinted with the name J. Bixby at the bottom of the spine, who is believed to be Jotham Bixby, the “father of Long Beach.” While being a significant item to the Rancho because of its direct connection to the Bixby family, the Works themselves have an interesting and controversial history.

Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832–1918) was California’s preeminent nineteenth-century historian. Born in Ohio, he arrived in California during the gold rush, and it was while managing a bookstore in San Francisco that he began to accumulate a voluminous collection of early California history. He stopped managing the bookstore in 1868, and by the 1880s he was devoting his full efforts to writing and publishing history texts.

More publisher than intellectual, Bancroft developed a thriving “book factory” of California history, utilizing an army of writers and researchers to assist his endeavors, and publishing their contributions under his own name. Bancroft produced the seven-volume History of California that is still used by academics today, and his name lives on in the world-renowned Bancroft Library of western American history, at the University of California, Berkeley.

BANCROFT, Hubert Howe, historian, was born in Granville, Ohio, May 5, 1832, son of Ashley and Lucy (Howe) Bancroft. His ancestors immigrated to America from England two centuries previously and settled in Connecticut, whence his father removed to Ohio. He devoted some time in preparing for college, but in his sixteenth year decided to enter business life, and was employed by his brother-in-law, a bookseller in Buffalo, N. Y. In 1851 he joined his father, who was mining in California, and remained there nearly four years, accumulating sufficient money to enable him to establish himself in San Francisco as a bookseller and stationer, afterwards adding publishing, printing and bookbinding departments. The business soon extended from Canada to Mexico, and branches were established in Hawaii, China and Japan. As early as 1859 Mr. Bancroft determined to make use of the vast amount of valuable historical material which would eventually be lost sight of for want of a recorder to put it into readable shape.
