Madame Navarro is one of the most accomplished actresses and gifted women America has ever produced. She was born in Sacramento, California, July 28, 1859. Her maiden name was Mary Antoinette Anderson. Her parents were of foreign descent. She soon decided to make the stage her profession, and neither the discouragements of her parents or friends deterred her from her purpose. On witnessing the "performance of Edwin Booth as "Richard the Third," she gave a repetition of this in her own home, which so impressed her parents that a private performance was given before her friends, and here she achieved her first success.

1910-1940Mary Anderson was an American actress who performed in both the United States and England in the 1870s and 1880s, retired from the stage in 1889, married, and spent the remaining fifty years of her life in England. Born in Sacramento, California in 1859, Mary Anderson grew up in Kentucky, where her family moved during her childhood, and was educated at the Ursuline Convent in Louisville. She was determined to become an actress from an early age, and at age 15 read for Charlotte Saunders Cushman, who suggested she train in New York. Mary Anderson made her stage debut as Juliet in a Louisville production of ROMEO & JULIET in 1875, toured the country, then made her New York debut in THE LADY OF LYONS (1877). After touring the United States for the next six years, she made her London debut in INGOMAR (1883). During the six years which followed Mary Anderson travelled between America and England, becoming renowned for her Shakespearean performances, especially as Rosalind, Hermione, and Perdita, and starring in several plays by W.S. ANDERSON, Mary, Mme. Navarro, actor born in Sacramento, Cal., 28th July, 1859. Her maiden name was Mary Antoinette Anderson. Her mother was German descent, and her father was the grandson of an Englishman. In January, 1860, her parents removed from Sacramento to Louisville, Ky., where she lived until 1877 Her father joined the Confederate army at the beginning of the Civil War, and was killed at Mobile, Ala., in 1862. Her mother was married again, in 1864, to Dr. Hamilton Griffin, a practicing physician in Louisville. Mary and her brother Joseph had a pleasant home. Mary was a bright, mischievous child, whose early pranks earned her the name of "Little Mustang." Afterwards, when her exuberance was toned down and she had settled seriously to study, she was called "Little Newspaper." In school she was so careless of books and fond of mischief, that at the age of thirteen years she was permitted to study at home.
