Avtar Singh Sandhu (9 September 1950 – 23 March 1988), who wrote under the pen namePash,[1] was an Indian poet, one of the major poets in Punjabi of the 1970s. He was killed by Sikh extremists on 23 March 1988.[2] His strongly left-wing views were reflected in his poetry.
Early life and activism
Pash was born as Avtar Singh Sandhu in 1950 in a small village called Talwandi Salem in Jalandhar district of Punjab, India, in a middle-class farmers family. His father Sohan Singh Sandhu was a soldier in the Indian Army who also composed poetry as a hobby. Pash grew up in the midst of the Naxalite movement, a revolutionary movement in India against the landlords, industrialists, traders, etc. who control the means of production. This was in the midst of the Green revolution which had addressed India's problem of famine using high yield crops, but had also unconsciously led to other forms of inequities in Punjab.[3]
In 1970, he published his first book of revolutionary poems, L Revolutionary Punjabi Poet Pash/Paash is one of the renownend writer in Punjabi Literature. Pash is the pen name, full name is Avtar Singh Sandhu. The death of dreams was considered the most dangerous. Avtar Singh Sandhu ‘Pash’ was a supporter of expressed socio-political freedom. Pash is known as the poet who composed his revolutionary poems and questioned the system. Pash started writing poetry at an early age. By the time the Khalistani movement in Punjab reached its peak, he was opposed to the movement through his poetry and magazines. Through poetry, Pash was constantly strengthening the socio-political consciousness in the masses. The tone of rebellion and change in his poems was so strong that his every word challenged the compositional system. There was a lot of opposition to his literature, but given the environment in which Pash grew up, he had the courage to express himself in words. Due to threats from Khalistani militants, Pash went to the US with his family but returned to India after some time. The Khalistanis had received news of his arrival. Pash was born on September 9,1950 in village Talwandi Salem of district Jalandhar.
Under the influence of Naxalite Movement Pash started to pen down left wing views in revolutionary poetry. Revolutionary Punjabi Poems are also written by Sant Ram Udasi and Lal Singh Dil. These revolutionary poets are also called Neo-Progressive poets.
Revolutionary poetry books by Pash are LOH KATHA, UDDADE BAZAN MAGAR, SAADE SAMIAN VICH, KHILRE HOEY VARKEY. Pash was murdered on March 23,1988.
