Ernst Friedrich Poppo (13 August 1794 – 6 November 1866), German classical scholar and schoolmaster, was born at Guben in Brandenburg. He studied at Leipzig.[1]
In 1818 he was appointed director of the gymnasium at Frankfurt an der Oder, where he died on 6 November 1866, having resigned his post three years before.
Poppo was an extremely successful teacher and organizer, and in a few years doubled the number of pupils at the gymnasium. He is chiefly known, however, for his exhaustive and complete edition of Thucydides in four parts (11 vols., 1821-1840), containing:

Recently released at CEPT University, Ahmedabad by B.V. Doshi, Governing Board member and chairman of the Auroville Town Development Council, this first major monograph of Poppo’s work spans his career till date and the influences that formed him and continue to do so, as well as his contribution to Auroville. Highly personal in his approach, his work challenges the senses with its rustic quality while sensitively responding to climate, the natural landscape and spirit of the place. The monograph provides a brief biography of the architect, profiles select projects and is richly illustrated with photographs and working drawings.
This first monograph is part of a larger series documenting the works of pioneering architects of Auroville, who have dedicated a major part of their life and work to Auroville.
The monograph has been authored by Mona Doctor-Pingel, who studied at the School of Architecture (CEPT), Ahmedabad, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Appropriate Technology at the University of Flensburg, Germany. She has an independent practice- •

SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Born on 978 at Flanders, Belgium to the Belgian nobility, the son of Tizekinus and Adalwif. His was a pious family; when Poppo was grown, his mother became a nun. Career soldier. He was a pilgrim to the Holy Lands in 1000, and then to Rome, Italy. While on the road late one night, a flame suddenly lit over his head, and his lance radiated a brilliant light. Poppo took this as a sign of the Holy Spirit, and started considering a religious vocation. Monk at the Saint Theirry monastery at Rheims, France in 1005.
Beginning in 1008 he worked with Abbot Richard of Saint-Vanne to restore order and religious observance to several houses. Prior of the monastery of Saint Vaast in Arras, France in 1013. Prior at Vasloges, France in 1016. Abbot-general for a large group of houses in Lotharingia (in modern France, Germany and Switzerland) in 1020. Abbot of Stavelot-Malmédy in Belgium in 1021.
