Claude-Michel Schönberg is a French composer and performer who, in collaboration with lyricist and librettist Alain Boublil, has produced several award-winning musicals that have made the duo notable figures in musical theatre.
Schönberg was born in Vannes, France, to musical Hungarian-Jewish parents. He began his career as a singer and record producer, but transitioned into composition after writing the music for France’s first rock opera La Révolution Française -- his first production with long time collaborator Alain Boublil. The two reunited five years later to bring to life Boublil’s vision of a mega-musical version of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Les Mis premiered two years later in France and transferred to London in 1985. The London production was a smash hit, earning three Olivier nominations and continuing to run to this day as the West End’s longest running show. Claude-Michel Schönberg
Born in 1944 to Hungarian parents, Claude-Michel Schönberg began his career in France as a singer, writer and producer of pop songs.
In collaboration with Alain Boublil, he is the book co-writer and the composer of La Révolution Française, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre and The Pirate Queen. In 2008, his musical Marguerite, in collaboration with Alain Boublil, Michel Legrand and Herbert Kretzmer, opened at the Haymarket Theatre in London.
Schönberg has supervised overseas productions and co-produced several international cast albums of his shows. In 2001, he composed his first ballet score, Wuthering Heights, which was created by the Northern Ballet in 2002. His ballet Cleopatra, which opened in 2011, was his second collaboration with David Nixon and his seventh complete score. In 2012, Schönberg co-wrote the screenplay and reconceived the music for the Les Misérables musical movie.

Schönberg began his career as a record producer and a singer. By the early 1970s he had become successful.
He wrote most of the music for the French musical and rock opera, La Révolution Française, France's first rock opera, in 1973, and also played the role of King Louis XVI in the show's production that year.
In 1974 he wrote the music and the lyrics of the song "Le Premier Pas", which became the number 1 popular song in France that year and sold over 1 million copies. Le Premier Pas was produced by Franck Pourcel. He recorded albums as a singer until 1985.
