South African Boer general (1836–1911)
Pieter Arnoldus "Piet" Cronjé (4 October 1836 – 4 February 1911) was a South African Boer general during the Anglo-Boer Wars of 1880–1881 and 1899–1902.
Biography
Born in the Cape Colony but raised in the South African Republic, Cronjé had a distinctive appearance, being short with a black beard and was reputed to have considerable personal courage.[citation needed] He made his reputation in the First Boer War, besieging the British garrison at Potchefstroom.[1] He was unable to force their surrender until after the conclusion of the general armistice, and was at this time accused of withholding knowledge of this armistice from the garrison.[2]
Cronjé was in command of the force that rounded up Leander Jameson at Doornkop at the conclusion of the Jameson Raid on 2 January 1896.[3] During the Second Boer War, Cronjé was general commanding in the western theatre of war. Cronje, Wessel Johannes, South Africa's cricket captain in a record 53 Tests and 138 one-day internationals between 1994 and 2000, died on June 1, 2002 when the cargo plane in which he was travelling crashed on Cradock Peak in the Outeniqua mountain range on its approach to his home town, George, in the Western Cape. He was just 32. Two years earlier, Hansie Cronje's admission that he took bribes from bookmakers to provide information and fix matches exposed the extent of a corruption scandal that cricket authorities had signally neglected to confront.
At first he had hotly denied charges levelled by the New Delhi police, who during a phone-tapping operation in March 2000 heard him conspiring with an Indian bookmaker, Sanjeev Chawla, to predetermine performances. And such was his standing as a player, captain and sporting ambassador for post-apartheid South Africa that few in the cricket world doubted him, preferring to heap scorn on the Indian investigation.

Wessel Johannes “Hansie” Cronje
Wessel Johannes "Hansie" Cronje was born in Bloemfontein on 25 September 1969 to Ewie and San-Marie Cronje. He attended Grey College in Bloemfontein, a prestigious private boy’s school. Hansie graduated as the head of his class after completing his matriculation in 1987.
An excellent all-round sportsperson, he represented the Free State (then Orange Free State) at cricket and rugby at schools level. His father Ewie had played for Orange Free State in the 1960s, and Hansie's older brother Frans had also played first-class cricket.
Cronje was selected as a representative for the all schools South African cricket team in both 1986 and 1987. His made his major cricket debut in 1987, when he was selected as an all-rounder to represent Free State. At the age of 21, he was appointed captain of the team. He was a right-handed batsman and was also a right-arm medium bowler. Whilst playing for the Free State, he attended the local university in Bloemfontein. Cronje earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Free State.
