Monique Lhuillier

Monique Lhuillier is a Filipino-American fashion designer and creative director known for her bridal, ready-to-wear and lifestyle brand. Internationally recognized as one of America’s foremost designers, she launched her eponymous brand in 1996 and has since established fashion houses in Los Angeles, California, where she primarily works and lives, as well as in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
Lhuillier was born to Michel J. Lhuillier, a French-born Filipino businessman and Amparito Llamas, a Filipina society figure and former model. She grew up in Cebu City and studied at Saint Theresa's College, continuing on to the Chateau Mont-Choisi finishing school in Lausanne, Switzerland.
After meeting her husband Tom Bugbee, Lhuillier began planning her wedding, which was her first foray on the bridal market, and thought it needed updating. She could not find any modern dresses, and did not like the excess of lace. She used her fashion degree to create dresses for her relatives and bridal party. After the wedding, there were business cards left for her. It was

Monique Lhuillier’s Career and Background

Designing For Her Own Wedding

Monique Lhuillier’s rise to popularity is almost too good to be true. After meeting her future husband Tom Bugbee while she was at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Lhuillier quit her job and put all her energy on planning the wedding.

This decision would prove to be the catalyst for her successful career designing wedding dresses. While shopping for her dress, Lhuillier was disappointed in the selection. As she explained to InStyle‘s Rubenstein, the “sleeves were too big and bodices too junked up with beads.”  The excessive lace in most designs made her feel very unattractive. Finally, she was able to find the perfect wedding dress, but she put her skills to use by designing 25 dresses for members of her bridal party and her family.

Lhuillier and Bugbee’s wedding reception was in 1995 at the Ritz-Carltonin Marina del Rey, California. By the end of the reception, Lhuillier had business cards waiting for her at the hotel’s front desk. ̶
