Swingley startet med hundekjøring i 1989 etter at broren hans Greg hadde fått han interessert i hundesledeløpet Iditarod. Han debuterte i dette hundesledeløpet i 1992 med en 9.-plass etter å ha ledet halvveis i løpet. Med 9.-plassen ble han beste førstegangskjører i 1992.
Hans første seier i Iditarod kom i 1995, og vant også i årene 1999, 2000 og 2001. I 2002 annonserte han at han skulle legge opp som hundekjører, men i 2004 gjorde han comeback som deltager i Iditarod. En øyesykdom medførte imidlertid at han måtte bryte i 2004.

His first Iditarod was in 1992. His first victory came in 1995 and he followed it by winning in 1999, 2000, and 2001. He competed in every Iditarod from 1992 to 2002, and during his rookie outing he won the Dorothy G. Page Halfway award, for being the first musher to reach the halfway point of the race. He is the only winner from the lower 48 states and second in number of wins.[1] Prior to his Iditarod wins, he also won the Montana Race to the Sky in 1991.[citation needed] Swingley pulled out of the 2004 Iditarod because of frostbite in his corneas (eyes).
