Martin Lawrence Winans was born March 5, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan. He and his fraternal twin brother, Carvin (who was born first), were the third and fourth children born to David "Pop" Winans, Sr. and Delores "Mom" Winans.

The Music
Born to musical parents, Mom and Pop Winans, Marvin Winans was the fourth of ten children. As a part of what is called "the First Family of contemporary Black gospel," he started singing at the age of 4. Marvin Winans Jr., born on December 28, 1979 in Detroit, Michigan is surrounded by musical and business success. He is the son of Marvin Winans Sr. the leader of the famed gospel cross-over singing group "The Winans" and female gospel great Vickie Winans. Growing up he frequently heard his family’s music on the radio including his uncle and aunt Bebe and Cece Winans, one of the greatest music duos in music history. He also grew up watching and learning from his extraordinarily talented brother, Mario Winans who has become a celebrated world renowned music producer and pop artist.
Marvin at the age of 18 began to blaze his own trail as a member of Winans Phase 2, the group he founded with his 3 cousins Michael Winans Jr., Carvin Winans Jr. and Juan Winans. The group achieved tremendous success with their debut album garnishing a Grammy award nomination, selling over 250,000 records and performing in front of crowds as large as 50,000, including shows in the U.S. and Europe (Germany, Holland, London).
