Grace Ntombizodwa Mugabe (néeMarufu; born 23 July 1965)[2] is a Zimbabwean entrepreneur, politician and the widow of the late President Robert Mugabe. She served as the First Lady of Zimbabwe from 1996[3] until her husband's resignation in November 2017,[4] a week after he was ousted from power.[5] Starting as a secretary to Mugabe, she rose in the ranks of the ruling ZANU–PF party to become the head of its Women's League and a key figure in the Generation 40 faction. At the same time, she gained a reputation for privilege and extravagance during a period of economic turmoil in the country.[6] She was given the nickname Gucci Grace due to her extravagance.[7] She was expelled from the party, with other G40 members, during the 2017 Zimbabwean coup d'état.
Mugabe was cited as one of the Top 100 most influential Africans by New African magazine in 2014.[8]
Personal life
Grace Ntombizodwa was born in Benoni, South Africa[9 On 6 September 2019, Robert Mugabe died in Singapore. He was eventually buried in his rural home in Zvimba. The Mugabe family as represented by nephew Leo Mugabe said that Mugabe had requested that Grace not leave the side of his coffin until he was buried. Grace Ntombizodwa Mugabe (nee Marufu) was on born 23 July 1965 in Benoni, Johannesburg, South Africa.[1] She is the fourth child in a family of five. [3]One brother is Reward Marufu. In 1970, at the age of five she moved back to Zimbabwe to stay in Chivhu, which is in Mashonaland East Province with her mother Idah Marufu.[3] Her father remained in South Africa, working to support the family. [3] Grace joined the Office of the President and Cabinet in the mid-1980s straight from college after she had completed a secretarial course.[4] At that time she was already married to Stanley Goreraza, a pilot with the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
