It happened at the Purim farbrengen in 5730/1970. Numerous Chassidim filled 770. Their eyes were trained on center stage where the Rebbe sat for hours, farbrenging on Purim topics, quoting verses from Megillas Esther and connecting them to the daily avoda of every Jew.
Between sichos, the Rebbe paused and the crowd burst into joyous song. Many raised a cup to say l’chaim to the Rebbe and the Rebbe responded with l’chaim v’livracha.
In the middle of the niggun, the Rebbe suddenly turned around and looked for one of the Chassidim. Within seconds, the Rebbe located him and motioned to him with his fingers to whistle.
To whistle? A street activity at a Chassidishe farbrengen? In the Rebbe’s presence, no less? But the Rebbe himself had motioned to whistle. It was quite clear.
A few seconds passed until the Chassid, R’ Meir Michel Abehsera, put two fingers to his lips and began to whistle. A long whistle at the world and all it represents, for the first time at a Chassidishe farbrengen.

With sadness we inform you of the passing of Rabbi Dr. Michael Meir Abehsera, OBM, a devout Chossid famous for his whistling on the Rebbe’s command to liven up the singing at Farbrengens and Kos Shel Brocha in 770. He was 80 years old.
Reb Meir was born in Morocco to a family known for their tzadikim and Kabbalists, the most famous of whom was Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira zt”l, the “Baba Sali.”
His family moved to France when Meir was a teenager, and he later relocated to New York.
Reb Meir lived with his family for many years among the Sephardic Jewish community in Flatbush, during which times he was niskarev to the Rebbe and Lubavitch.
A devout and active Chossid, he is said to have made over 2,000 Baalei Teshuva during his lifetime. He was also a renowned author and expert in the field of macrobiotics.
Reb Meir later moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he lived for many years. In recent years he also lived in Jerusalem, Israel.

A descendant of the famed Abuchatzeira sages and kabbalists of Morocco, Rabbi Abehsera was renowned internationally for his books on natural medicine and macrobiotics.
Born in Morocco, at the young age of ten Rabbi Meir Michel Abehsera moved with his family to France. There he became a successful civil engineer, but his heart’s passion was in writing and literature.
While in France, Rabbi Abehsera became very involved in a newly emerging field of healing through macrobiotics. Following that path, in the early sixties the ambitious writer moved to New York and opened the first macrobiotic restaurant in New York City. During the next decade Abehsera published eight books and became a sought-after lecturer nationwide.
