According to this document preserved in the National Archives of Georgia, Galaktion Tabidze was born on November 5, 1891 (in the old style) and was baptized on January 3, 1892.

Father: Vasil Stefane Tabidze, who died at the birth of Galaktioni.

Mother - Makrine, daughter of Giorgi.

Godfather: Tadeoz Namicheishvili.

The mystery of the Epiphany was performed by the priest Stefane Tabidze, who was Galaktion's grandfather.

The first collection of Galaktion's poems was published in 1914. The second collection - "Cran Aux fleurs artistiques" ("Skull with artistic flowers") - was published in 1919 by Petre (Tutku) Gvaramia. This book brought the poet special popularity.

Born in Georgia in 1892, poet Galaktion Tabidze grew up during a time of great upheaval in what was then the Russian Empire. He survived the Great Purge and political repression of the 1930s and battled his own depression and alcoholism to become of one of Georgia’s most prominent and influential literary figures of the first half of the twentieth century.

Tabidze’s father died before he was born and he was brought up by his mother and her family in largely impoverished conditions. As a youth he went to Georgia’s second biggest city Kutaisi to be educated and when he graduated from the seminary he went on to teach. Tabidze was a solitary figure and did not make friends easily, something which may have contributed to the slow initial development of his standing as a poet.

In 1914, he published his first work which was greatly influenced by the symbolist movement of the time but did not garner widespread critical acclaim. TABIDZE, GALAKTION (1892-1959). Georgian poet. Born in the village of Chkviisi, he studied at the Tbilisi Theological Seminary, but became involved in revolutionary circles. In 1908, he published his first writings and later traveled to Russia and Europe, where he was influenced by the symbolists. A remarkably talented poet, he authored thousands of poems that established him as one of the greatest Georgian poets and accorded him the rare honor of being known simply as Galaktion. Among his most famous poems are Usikvarulod, Me da Ghame, Kari hkris, Droshebi chkara, Sasaplaoni, etc. Although he survived the Stalinist purges, the deaths of his wife and friends plunged him into depression and alcoholism. He was eventually placed in a psychiatric hospital but jumped to his death from the hospital window in 1959.
