Fossils@25: An electrifying gig by the band for their fans

For 25 years, Rupam Islamand his band-mates have been synonymous with a genre that they helped create – Bangla rock. It is legit to say that 2023 marks the age of the genre, as much as being the band’s 25th anniversary year. On January 9, the official birthday of Fossils, in a show aptly named ‘Fossils Panchabingshoti’ (‘Fossils 25’), the band – led by Rupam Islam, guitarists Allan Ao and Deep Ghosh, Tanmoy Das on drums and Prasenjit Chakrabutty on bass – showed exactly why they rule, rocking out a 7,000-plus strong crowd, delivering hit after massive hit for over two hours on the sprawling lawns of a south Kolkata venue.

Fossils came to be at a time when Bangla rock was taking baby footsteps. On one hand, contemporary Bengali music was undergoing a sea-change, especially with the contributions of a revamped Moheener Ghoraguli and poet-singer-songwriter Suman Chattopadhyay (now Kabir Suman). The latter movement had a strong emphasis on lyrics as much as the music. Unfortunately, it's rock counterpart was still heavy with a hangover of Eighties glam-rock, with little or no emphasis on meaningful words that would complement the music.

Fossils burst onto this scene and changed it. Rupam Islam, after his debut solo album launched at the Calcutta Book Fair in 1998, went on to form Fossils with a handful of musical colleagues who shared his vision of a band that would push the envelope in contemporary Bengali rock. The band became the pioneers of a new sound in Bangla rock; with melodic aggression and soaring power-ballads as its forte.
