Timothy Lee "Tim" Richmond (June 7, 1955 – August 13, 1989). was a NASCARdriver from Ashland, Ohio. His career was cut short when he contracted HIV. He later died from complications of AIDS.[1]
Career
[change | change source]Unlike many other NASCAR drivers, Richmond was born into wealth and did not grow up auto racing. He did not begin racing until the age of 21, when he drove a Sprint Car owned by a friend.
He continued to the open-wheel circuits, racing in the 1980Indianapolis 500 and finishing ninth. He decided to move on into stock-car racing in NASCAR, where he spent the rest of his days. His first few seasons, he bounced from team to team looking for a permanent ride, which he found in 1982. He raced in 26 events, winning twice and finishing in the top 5 seven times, but finished 26th in Winston Cup standings.

Tim Richmond was a perennial playboy. Growing up in wealth, he always appreciated the best things and was very flamboyant especially in comparison to the other gruff, working-class drivers of the time like Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough. Richmond had expensive tastes in food and drink and lived a fast lifestyle that mirrored his on-track performances.

Timothy Lee Richmond (June 7, 1955 – August 13, 1989) was an American race car driver from Ashland, Ohio. He competed in IndyCar racing before transferring to NASCAR's Winston Cup Series. Richmond was one of the first drivers to change from open wheel racing to NASCAR stock cars full-time, which later became an industry trend.[4] He won the 1980 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award and had 13 victories during eight NASCAR seasons.
