A revolutionary unification of art and technology, cartoon animation was seen as the medium through which artists could bring their paintings and graphic designs to life. In this article, the second of an ARTUNER series surveying the history of cartoons, we will explore how cartoon animation, as an artistic movement and technological marvel, developed during the early 20^th century.

The photographic tools developed in the last decades of the 19^th century revolutionised the photographic visual experience and set the stage for early cartoon animation.
