Emil Loteanu (November 6, 1936 – April 18, 2003) was a Soviet film director born in Clocuşna, Moldova which was then a part of Greater Romania. He moved to Moscow in his early life.

Biography

Loteanu was born in Clocuşna, and after the death of his father and losing contact with his mother, who had moved to Romania, lived his early life on the streets, sleeping in warehouses and hostels. He studied at the Mkhat studio school and graduated from VGIK in 1962. He made his directorial debut with Bolshaya gora in 1960 at the Moldova Film Studio, and continued to make films there until 1975, when he joined Mosfilm. With films such as Tabor ukhodit v nebo (aka Queen of the Gypsies, 1975) and Moy laskovyy i nezhnyy zver (aka A Hunting Accident, (1977), Loteanu began to attract international attention.

Loteanu died on April 18, 2003, in Moscow, at the age of 66.

  Emil Loteanu (6 November 1936 – 18 April 2003) was a Moldovan and Soviet film director born in what is now Moldova. He moved to Moscow in his early life. His best known films are Lăutarii, Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven, A Hunting Accident and Anna Pavlova.^[1]

  Life and career

  Emil Vladimirovich Loteanu was born on 6 November 1936 in the Bessarabian village Clocuşna (now Ocniţa District, Moldova); at the time, the area was part of Greater Romania.

  His paternal ancestors were from Bukovina. After the annexation of Bessarabia to the Soviet Union, they moved to Bucharest. After the death of his father and losing contact with his mother, who had moved to Romania, he lived his early life on the streets, sleeping in warehouses and hostels. Between 1953 and 1955, he studied at the actor's faculty of the Moscow Art Theatre. In 1962, he graduated from VGIK (workshop of Grigori Roshal and Y. Genik).
