Chris Matthews '67 of MSNBC'S 'Hardball' to Speak at Holy Cross

Chris Matthews ‘67, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show,” will give a talk about his new book “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” (Simon & Schuster, 2011) on Monday, March 26 at 8 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom at the College of the Holy Cross. Following his talk, which is free and open to the public, Matthews will be available to sign copies of his book.

A proud and devoted 1967 graduate of Holy Cross, Matthews has distinguished himself as a journalist, Washington bureau chief, presidential speechwriter, congressional staffer and best-selling writer.  He is the author of six books including “Hardball” (1988), “Kennedy & Nixon” (1996), “Now Let Me Tell You What I Really Think” (2001), “American: Beyond Our Grandest Notions” (2002), “Life’s a Campaign” (2007), and most recently “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero,” a biography based on personal interviews with those closest to John F. Christopher John Matthews (born December 17, 1945) is an American political commentator, retired talk show host, and author. Matthews hosted his weeknight hour-long talk show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, on America's Talking and later on MSNBC, from 1997 until March 2, 2020. He announced on his final episode that he was retiring, following an accusation that he had made inappropriate comments to a Hardball guest four years earlier.[1][2][3][4][5]

Matthews went to La Salle College High School. Matthews served in the United States Peace Corps in Swaziland from 1968 to 1970 as a trade development adviser.

Matthews worked with Tip O'Neill, the Speaker of the House. O'Neill, a Democrat, was a political rival of VHS Republican president Ronald Reagan, but the two remained friends, saying that after 6:00 the two could go out for a drink together. Matthews wrote a book about their relationship.
