Pioneer of Dravidian movement, prominent film producer R M Veerappan dead
This Dravidian leader born on September 9, 1926, enjoyed good ties with DMK stalwart and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi too. He launched the MGR Kazhagam party after quitting the AIADMK.
He breathed his last at around 2 pm today.

“I was very shocked and saddened to hear the news of Veerappan’s demise. He was one of the pioneers of the Dravidian movement and founder of MGR Kazhagam,” Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said.
Recalling his visit to Veerappan’s residence in September 9 last year to wish him on his 98th birthday, Stalin said “not only in politics but also in the film industry, Veerappan left an indelible mark.” It was sad that he could not live a full life to complete 100 years, the Chief Minister added.

Behind every successful man is a woman, goes the adage. Not in legendary actor-politician MG Ramachandran’s (MGR) case. Behind MGR was RM Veerappan (RMV). In 1984, as his boss – matinee idol and Chief Minister MGR – lay speechless in a United States hospital after a kidney transplant and later with his speech impaired, RMV led the campaign to counter the opposition propaganda that MGR was not alive and even if he was, was not in a condition to govern.
RMV first released a photograph of MGR smiling from his hospital bed in the US, holding up two fingers in a victory symbol. Other photographs included the leader eating followed by a slick video of MGR holding and reading newspapers, eating and smiling. Indira Gandhi’s funeral footage was attached to this with Valampuri John providing the commentary. Titled Vetrithirumagan or The Victorious, the video evoked a huge emotional response wherever it was screened. - R. M. Veerappan (also referred to as RMV or Rama Veerappan) is an Indian politician, an early Dravidian Leader, and a movie producer and screenwriter from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He is the founder and leader of the MGR Kazhagam party. He served as a Cabinet Minister in five governments from 1977 to 1996, is a three-time Member of Legislative Council and a two-time member of the Legislative Assembly. He was the Leader of the House for Legislative Assembly and Leader of ADMK party of the Legislative Council. He was the architect behind the ADMK organization, unified the MGR fan clubs for the party formation. He was called as the 'Chanakya' of AIADMK politics in the 70's and 80's. (en)
