Secretary-General Appoints Haile Menkerios of South Africa

Biographical Note

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Haile Menkerios of South Africa as the new Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and Special Representative to the African Union at the level of Under-Secretary-General.

While continuing his current assignment as Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Mr. Menkerios will replace Zachary Muburi-Muita, who will complete his UNOAU assignment on 30 June. The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Muburi-Muita for his dedicated service with UNOAU since its establishment in 2010, and for deepening the strategic partnership between the African Union and the United Nations.

When Martin Luther King Jr. was killed. I was enraged.

Parties on campus, visiting friends in Cambridge.

What is the most important value you learned at Brandeis?

The importance of social awareness, and a commitment to positive engagement in affecting life around me.

Which talent did Brandeis help you develop most?

Listening — there was so much to grasp that was new to me, that I didn’t know and wanted to learn.

What do you wish you had studied harder?

History. I hardly took any history courses, and had to read and study on my own after college.

What three words of advice would you give to current Brandeis students?

Listen, learn, engage.

If you could go back to college, what would you do differently?

Not much, really.

Haile Menkerios (Tigrinya: ሃይለ መንቀሪዮስ, born October 1, 1946) is an Eritrean diplomat who served as the Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and as Special Representative to the African Union, at the level of Under-Secretary-General from 2013 until 2018. Studying in the United States, Menkerios earned a bachelor's degree from Brandeis University and a master's degree from Harvard University.
