We came to New York on the train in 1945. It took about three days. And I remember that I never saw houses so close together before in Brooklyn, and I never saw leaves piled up so high ever because they don’t get that in California. I lived next door to my husband’s aunt and one day when I was about fifteen and one-half she started calling me to the window in Arabic and point her finger “Come, come, come.” So I used to go. Our windows faced each other. I would go in and she would say do I know how to make Turkish coffee? And I did know how because I made it for my father, my mother taught me. And there is a technique to it that you let the steam raise three times. You take it off the fire you put it back on three times, and the third time it’s ready to pour in the Turkish cup so I passed that test. I didn’t know it was a test.
