Yannis tsarouchis paintings

He studied at the School of Fine Arts (1928-1934) under Dimitrios Biskinis, Dimitrios Geraniotis, Spyros Vikatos, Georgios Jakovides, Thomas Thomopoulos, Yannis Kefallinos and Konstantinos Parthenis. At the same time he spent four years (1930-1934) in the workshop of Fotis Kontoglou who initiated him into Byzantine painting and music.

In 1935 he travelled to Constantinople and Smyrna and then went to Paris where he learned the art of copperplate. In the French capital he studied at first hand the painting of the Renaissance, Impressionism and the work of Theophilos from the Teriade collection. He also met Matisse, Laurens and Giacometti. In 1936 he returned to Greece and two years later organized his first solo show at the Th. Alexopoulos business in Athens. This was followed by many solo shows among which were retrospectives in 1952 at the British Council, 1966 at the Astor gallery and 1981 at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki while in 1980 a solo show was organized at the Grand Palais. Yannis Tsarouchis has remained in history as the contemporary Greek artist who made tradition popular and Byzantine art known across the Greek border, with the help of Iolas, who inspired him to paint neoclassical buildings and sailors. He was a restless personality who never ceased to work and be involved with the essence of the art of painting.

The joy and the wonder of life are mainly expressed in Yannis Tsarouchis’ work. He tried to balance the great traditions and capture the eternal artistic values, with his paintings embracing assimilated folk and folk elements, especially the port of Piraeus. He is considered one of the greatest modern Greek painters with international prominence, especially in France.

 

 

At the same time, he worked as a stage designer in both Greek and foreign theaters with great success. This is due to the establishment of the sailor’s presence in dance or not – which was even considered necessary – in almost all the of Greek cinema that was filmed in popular centers.

Historical Museum of Crete - 20 December 2023

Paintings by Yannis Tsarouchis, the internationally acclaimed painter of Greece, from the Zacharias G. Portalakis Modern Art Collection are displayed from Wednesday 20 December 2023 at the Historical Museum of Crete (Temporary Exhibition Room, 1st floor).

This is the sixth temporary exhibition co-organised by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies and the collector Zacharias Portalakis, following Divinity, (dis)continued (group exhibition), Dialogue with the Invisible (works by Jannis Spyropoulos), Teratologies (works by Diamantis Diamantopoulos), On the Move (works by Alexis Akrithakis) and To Time and to Silence (works by Sotiris Sorogas).
