In the mid-1960s, the American artist John Baldessari (1931 – 2020) came to the realization that a photographic image or written text was better able to express his artistic intentions than a representational painting. This insight made him re-evaluate not only painting as such, but also what defines art, how art is made and what art can look like. John Baldessari was born in National City, California in 1931. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1953 from San Diego State College. After a year of advanced art history studies at the University of California, Berkley, Baldessari returned to San Diego State College where he received his Master of Arts in Painting in1957. He proceeded to engage in post-graduate work at Chouinard Art Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Baldessari taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA from 1970-1988 and UCLA 1996-2007.

Baldessari's artwork has been featured in more than 300 solo exhibitions and in over 1000 group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. His projects include unique works, prints, artist books, videos, films, billboards and public works. Biography

John Baldessari was born in National City, on San Diego Bay in California in 1931. He enrolled at San Diego State College in 1949 and received his BA in painting in 1953. He also studied at Berkeley in 1953. He returned to San Diego State College in 1955 and earned his MA in 1957. As a graduate student he started teaching in the colleges and schools of San Diego; he continued to do so until 1961. From 1962 until 1968, he taught at Southwestern College at Chula Vista, near San Diego. While at Southwestern he began to work in photography, film, and video. From 1970 to 1985, he taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, where he continues to teach today. He currently lives and works in Santa Monica, California.
